Chemnitz is the third largest city in Saxony. During the GDR, the city was known as "Karl-Marx-Stadt" and received its original name back in 1990. A large monument with the head of its namesake adorns today in the inner city. Today the city is the most industrialized region of central Germany. The core industries are automotive industry and mechanical engineering. Around 50 research and development facilities are located in the city. The inner city adorns some historic buildings. A special landmark is the "Red Tower" building material which partly dates from the 12th century.
